Defence White Papers
Defence Assessments form the basis of Defence's advice to the Government on whether or not a new White Paper is needed.
Defence White Papers are a government's highest-level statement of Defence policy. They are a public expression of New Zealand's view of the international strategic environment and what this means for:
- the Defence contribution to New Zealand's national security
- Defence policy and relationship priorities
- the New Zealand Defence Force's mix of ships, aircraft, vehicles and equipment (capabilities)
- Defence personnel, organisational and infrastructure priorities.
Defence White Paper processes also include the assessment of capability and personnel costs to ensure that Defence policy expectations, and the military capabilities needed to meet these, are affordable.
The most recent Defence White Paper was released in June 2016.
