Defence industry strategy

The current strategic environment requires both Defence and industry to become more resilient, agile, and innovative, while continuing to deliver value for money.

In this context, implementing the 2025 Defence Capability Plan requires a partnership with industry to deliver capability faster and with resilience. This will be done by:

    • providing greater clarity of what is needed by Defence, when, and within what budget;

    • prioritising defence procurement and industry integration with Australia; and

    • harnessing and enabling industry innovation and technologies.

Working in partnership with industry will also support the Government’s economic growth agenda, including by further optimising the use of New Zealand businesses in the Defence industrial base, fostering exports, and promoting innovative and advanced technologies.

Developing a strategy

Work is now underway on a new Defence Industry Strategy which will cover:

    • the role of industry in implementing the Defence Capability Plan;

    • the extent to which the use of New Zealand industry is being optimised in supporting Defence;

    • procurement reform with a focus on reducing the time taken to deliver capability into service;

    • joint procurement and joint industry integration with Australia;

    • Defence’s relationship with the emerging technology sector; and

    • reshaping communications with industry.

Companies with an existing relationship with Defence have been invited to briefings to support the implementation of the Defence Capability Plan.
