New Zealand values a peaceful, safe, secure region and is committed to preserving and protecting Antarctica and the Southern Ocean for present and future generations. We support the Antarctic Treaty principles and strive to maintain a peaceful, nuclear free and protected Antarctica.
LOCATION: Scott Base - Antarctica
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade leads New Zealand’s engagement on Antarctic issues with support from agencies across government to engage with partners to sustain a strong and effective Antarctic Treaty System. Our Policy Branch supports this work.
Providing logistical support to Antarctica is one of the New Zealand Defence Force’s (NZDF's) longest standing engagements. Each year the NZDF undertakes flights to Antarctica, transporting personnel and cargo to Scott Base, but also in support of Southern Ocean maritime surveillance activities. The NZDF provide support to Terminal Operations at Harewood (Christchurch International Airport) and McMurdo (load and passenger processing, fuel delivery, ship off-loads teams), light engineering teams for Scott Base and Scott Base support personnel (plant operators, cargo handlers, communications and administration staff). Additionally, the ice strengthened vessel HMNZS Aotearoa carries out resupply missions to Scott Base every two years. Up to 220 personnel are typically involved in supporting the Antarctic season.
